BNSF Railway Co. has announced a 60-percent reduction in transit times for its domestic intermodal premium container traffic, while adding 16 days of service frequencies. The changes are intended to attract more over-the-road freight to the intermodal option, the railroad said. On the premier transcontinental route between Los Angeles/San Bernardino and Chicago, BNSF has cut transit time by seven to 10 hours, giving customers a morning availability and allowing for same-day delivery. The railroad has also reduced transit time between Memphis and Los Angeles by four to six hours, while increasing both inbound and outbound day-of-week frequency at Houston. BNSF made 77 service changes to its domestic intermodal service in 2009, reducing transit schedules by a total of 300 hours and adding 32 days of frequency.
