"In my opinion, the fuel tax is the best way to fund highway infrastructure," Sanderson says. "It is one of the most efficiently collected taxes out there and we need the money to repair our highways. From the standpoint of social goals, increasing the fuel tax and driving up the cost of a gallon of fuel will encourage folks to buy more fuel-efficient vehicles." Sanderson is strongly opposed to putting in a different funding mechanism such as a tax on miles traveled. "That lets the government get too involved in our lives," he says. "Just take the fuel tax up and keep raising it so that revenue will meet spending requirements. It is a very efficient tax - it is just not at the right level now."

Taking a long-term view, Sanderson likes the potential of natural-gas-powered vehicles and hybrid vehicles. "These are still tremendously more expensive than traditional diesel engines, but if we can get some federal incentive money to boost the technology, we have  all the natural gas we need right here in the U.S.

Transplace has seen tremendous growth in the past year of its new business in Mexico. "Nearly all of our U.S. customers have freight moving either within Mexico or across the border and they have trusted us to take over management of their freight in these markets as well," Sanderson says. He is a firm advocate for implementing NAFTA provisions that would allow Mexican trucking companies to operate in the U.S. "There are high-quality trucking companies in Mexico just like there are high-quality trucking companies in the U.S., and they have safe equipment and safe drivers. I think we should honor our trade agreements," he says.
