Socket Mobile Inc., a provider of mobile productivity technology, has developed model 8Qi of its 2D cordless hand scanner.
The new version can scan both 1D “liner” barcodes and 2D QR codes. The device is especially suitable for mobile point-of-sale applications, where 1D UPC barcodes, 2D mobile coupons or loyalty cards need to be scanned, the vendor said. Model 8Qi is less than half an inch thick and weighs less than two ounces. It can be attached to most smartphones, including the Apple iPhone, iPod Touch and Samsung S4 devices in a “sled-type” configuration. The new model is the second in Socket Mobile’s line of Series 8 cordless barcode scanners, which attach to most smartphones and enable one-handed professional scanning. It is also suited for mobile ticketing and high-end retail environments, where 2D barcodes are gaining popularity for security and data capacity, Socket said. The device is expected to become generally available through the company’s worldwide distribution partners at the end of the third quarter of 2014.
