Associate Involvement Key to Successful Transition of Retail Cross Dock

Challenge: A national retail chain wanted to work with fewer, strategically chosen 3PL partners. For a busy cross-dock facility, the company transitioned the business to Kane Is Able (KANE), which also operates cross docks for the retailer in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Hampshire, and Ohio.

All associates were thoroughly oriented on the KANE culture and the company's unique brand of customer service; • Associate Empowerment. Web-based software was implemented that makes it easy for associates to submit moneysaving, time-saving ideas. Each staff member is required to submit an idea per week; • Safety Training. To bring down a high recordable incident rate (RIR) for safety, KANE conducted extensive training.

Results: • RIR went from 6.0 to 0.0; • The facility went from 9th place to 3rd place on the retailer's operational index of 25 nationwide facilities; • KANE was named the retailer's 2014 3PL of the Year.
