DHL Completes Expansion of Central Asia Hub Facility in Hong Kong

DHL Express has completed the expansion of its Central Asia Hub (CAH) facility in Hong Kong. Situated at the Hong Kong International Airport, the operation is one of the main intercontinental hubs within the global air network of DHL Express. It has doubled in size to 35,000 square meters, with a throughput rate of 75,000 pieces per hour, and is expected to handle 40 million shipments this year. The CAH connects the Asia Pacific region with the rest of the world, in addition to serving as one of the main Asian bases for DHL's airline partners Polar Air and AeroLogic. The carriers will operate expanded trans-Pacific and Euro-Asian trade lanes beginning in October of this year and the spring of 2009, respectively. The Hong Kong CAH serves as one of the region's main gateways to China, and as a distribution hub for the Pearl River Delta area. It is also home base for Air Hong Kong, the joint venture between DHL Express and Cathay Pacific. More than 60 percent of express cargo processed by the CAH consists of intra-Asia Pacific shipments, and the figure is expected to grow with a rise in intra-regional trade, the company said.
