DHL Deploys Helicopters for Deliveries in Downtown Chicago

DHL is now utilizing helicopters to deliver letters and packages of up to 650 pounds in downtown Chicago.

The new service provides early-morning delivery for area financial and legal firms requiring urgent document receipt, the company said. Mike Parra, chief executive officer of DHL Express U.S., said the company has received "tremendous" customer feedback on its helicopter services in New York and Los Angeles. International shipments destined for Chicago enter the U.S. for processing at the DHL Americas Hub in Cincinnati, OH before connecting to a flight bound for Chicago's O'Hare International Airport. Shipments are then separated, loaded into the DHL helicopter and transported to the new Vertiport Chicago facility in the Illinois Medical District. From there, a DHL courier meets the helicopter and provides the final-mile delivery. Operated for DHL by Helimotion of Joliet, Ill., the helicopter is a Bell 206B3 Jet Ranger.
