The Amex study shows that 92 percent of Americans will hit the stores for back-to-school shopping this fall, spending an average of $1,094 on supplies, which is 26 percent more than in 2012. The research said that a probable cause for the increase was that half of parents with school-aged children plan on buying at least one digital gadget during this back-to-school shopping season, compared to 36 percent in 2012.

The top electronics buys planned for back-to-school shopping in 2013 include:

* laptops - 25 percent of shoppers planning on purchases, up from 15 percent in 2012

* scientific calculators - 18 percent, up from 15 percent

* tablets - 15 percent, up from 7 percent

* mobile phones - 13 percent, up from 12 percent

When parents buy their kids a mobile phone this year, nearly seven out of ten will purchase a high-tech smartphone.
