Finland's VR Transpoint Implements New Logistics System

VR Transpoint, Finland's largest logistics services group, has joined with Vilant Systems to implement a new logistics system based on second-generation radio frequency identification (RFID) technology. The project represents the first full-scale implementation in Finland's rail industry, the company said. VR Transpoint personnel can now track rail equipment with the help of handheld devices. All information is automatically registered in the logistics system, eliminating manual processes. Work instructions are digitally delivered through the handheld devices, allowing for the real-time, error-free flow of information, according to the provider. Because RFID tags require no visual contact, they can be dirty or embedded while remaining functional. The feature is especially important in the tracking of industrial assets within harsh environments. VR Transpoint has operations in nine European countries and Russia. It is part of the VR group of travel, logistics and infrastructure engineering services, including rail, groupage, bulk movements and international transportation. Vilant Systems is a supplier of supply-chain and asset-tracking systems, including both software and hardware, based on RFID.
