Georgia Pacific, Nordic Cold Storage Automate With Warehouse Management Systems From RedPrairie

Georgia Pacific, the maker of tissue and paper products with brands such as Lotus, KittenSoft and Thirst Pockets, is seeing the results of a warehouse management system (WMS) that it acquired from RedPrairie Corp. two years ago for its distribution operations in the United Kingdom. The system is in place at Georgia Pacific's pallet distribution center near Wigan, Lancashire. Overseeing operations at the 350,000-square-foot facility, the software integrates with a back-office enterprise resource planning (ERP) system from SAP AG. Its cycle-counting capabilities have helped to streamline stock-taking by interleaving routine inventory checks with putaway and picking tasks. According to RedPrairie, the company can achieve instant visibility of inventory levels and 99.9-percent stock-level accuracy. Real-time warehouse management, combined with advanced store-calculation algorithms, have led to a 12-percent increase in Georgia Pacific's warehouse capacity, the vendor said. As a result, the company no longer needs to rent off-site storage facilities to accommodate warehouse overspills. RedPrairie also announced that Nordic Cold Storage LLC, a national provider of temperature-controlled warehousing and transportation, has gone live with the vendor's WMS at its facility in Atlanta, GA.
