Hurricane Sandy Makes Port Jersey Logistics Hurry Up and Wait

Challenge: As hurricane season approaches, Port Jersey Logistics recalls a project impacted by Hurricane Sandy. By mid-2012, an Israel-based kosher foods exporter had outgrown its East Coast 3PL provider. Furthermore, its shipments would soon double during autumn's peak season. Transitioning several products to PJL was underway when, on October 29, the worst natural disaster in NJ history changed everything.

Solution: Overnight, the food transfer's order status went from large to non-existent, as power outages and flooding rendered all foods unsellable. Dual problems arose: There were no products to restock the food provider's customers' shelves, and the shipments - large to begin with - were now building upon each other due to the weeklong port closure caused by Sandy.

Results: PJL received and distributed 30 containers - triple the original delivery's size. The project exemplifies how proper training and a mix of improvisation and experience were heavily relied upon to overcome an extreme, unforeseeable circumstance.

About the Solution Provider: Port Jersey Logistics' facilities and services meet logistics requirements for such products as grocery, specialty foods, alcoholic beverages, health/personal care, electronics, ingredients and raw materials. PJL also offers Value Added Services like freight consolidation, packaging, repacking, shrinkwrapping, labeling and ticketing, return services, point-of-purchase displays, container drayage, freight management and fulfillment.
