Orbcomm Launches Solar-Powered Trailer-Tracking Tool

Orbcomm Inc., a provider of machine-to-machine technology, has launched its solar-powered GT 1100 trailer-tracking system for the transportation and distribution industry.

Just one inch high, the device is easily installed on trailer rooftops, in between the corrugations of intermodal containers or on virtually any type of unpowered asset, the company said. The system draws on solar-recharging technology for low-power consumption, messaging and long service life. Customers can build their own messaging schedules in line with business requirements, without message restrictions or extra cost, Orbcomm said. The GT 1100 includes CargoWatch, a Web application for device management, enabling visibility for fleet and operations managers. The application provides near-real-time alerts on trailer status, location, history, and arrival and departure events. Orbcomm markets its tracking, monitoring and control services under the ReeferTrak, GenTrak, GlobalTrak and CargoWatch brands.
