The buzz surrounding big data shows no signs of slowing. But as federal government and industry take steps to harness big data one group is lagging behind - state and local government. According to a new report, "The State and Local Big Data Gap," state and local agencies need to double their storage and computational power, and triple their personnel to successfully leverage big data.

The study reveals that state and local IT professionals recognize that harnessing big data can bolster agency missions, but are making very little progress. So, what is holding state and local agencies back?

MeriTalk surveyed state and local IT professionals to find:

"¢ Forty-four percent of state and local agencies are not discussing big data; and 39 percent are just beginning to learn about this technology

"¢ Eighty-seven percent of respondents say their stored data has grown in the last two years; with one in three reporting their data has grown too large to analyze

"¢ Only 2 percent of state and local agencies have a complete big data strategy

"¢ Seventy-nine percent of state and local agencies estimate it will be at least three years before they are able to take full advantage of big data
