Supplier Diversity Often More Advanced in U.S. Than in Many Parts of the World

In the United States, the concept of supplier diversity is becoming more embedded in corporate culture each year. Supply management professionals seek out small- and midsized businesses owned and operated by women, African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities to round out their supply chains, and they are increasingly developing relationships and partnerships built on the foundation of mutual benefit to both parties. Such initiatives outside the U.S. often aren't quite as developed.

For some organizations, working with women- and minority-owned business enterprise, especially in the first and second tiers of the supply chain, is nothing new. Yet to some, it can be a challenge to simply define what supplier diversity means to their companies, and which companies are considered diverse suppliers.

Outside of the U.S., many countries are in the midst of developing their own definitions of supplier diversity. Not all of them are as far along in maturity of their programs as those in the U.S., but governments, associations and large organizations are hammering out strategies to encourage companies to work with companies owned by women and minorities.
