Worthington Steelpac Plans Mass Production of Lightweight Steel Pallets

Worthington Steelpac will begin production next month of a new model of steel pallet. The lightweight, flame-resistant Steelpac Distribution Pallet was designed to meet capacity and compatibility standards of the Grocery Manufacturers Association. According to Worthington, the new pallet results in lower shipping costs than the use of wood or plastic pallets. The unit prevents rust, does not attract or harbor insects, and offers superior racking strength compared with traditional pallets, the manufacturer said. During the final 12 months of testing, the steel distribution pallet had less than a 5-percent damage rate, which is five times less than the average damage rate of a wood-block-style pallet, according to sales manager Jon Holthaus. Additional testing at Worthington Cylinders, a sister company, produced a zero-percent damage rate after two years and 52 turns. Launched in 2001, Worthington Steelpac has concentrated on the customized pallet and racking business. The Steelpac Distribution Pallet extends the line of products and creates new markets, the company said.
