Con-way Freight, Tropical Shipping Inaugurate Direct, Door-to-Port Service From U.S. to Bahamas, Caribbean
Con-way Freight, a provider of regional less-than-truckload (LTL) services in the U.S., has joined with Tropical Shipping to begin service from the U.S. to ports throughout the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Tropical Shipping offers oceangoing services to more than 30 ports in the Caribbean. The new TropicalDirect service will handle LTL and less-than-containerload (LCL) freight. U.S. shippers with products bound for the Bahamas and Caribbean can initiate the export process with a single, toll-free phone call to Tropical Shipping. The company's customer-service personnel can then tap into Con-way Freight's network of more than 440 service centers in the U.S., to execute ground delivery to Tropical's warehouse receiving locations in New Jersey and South Florida. Tropical Shipping will then oversee ocean carriage of the shipment to its final island destination. In the process, the partners said, customers get single-carrier accountability for shipment tracking, documentation support, door-to-port pricing and single-invoice billing for most shipments. The partnership provides service to ports in the Bahamas, eastern Caribbean, British Virgin Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands and Dominican Republic. https://freight.con-way.com

DHL Relaunches "Virtual Warehouse" With Enhanced Visibility
DHL has enhanced its Global Forwarding Consolidated Distribution Service (CDS), described by the company as a "virtual warehouse" offering, with the addition of new shipment-visibility features. According to the company, customers can reduce brokerage fees and delivery times for shipments originating in Asia, Europe and Latin America. The Web-based service provides point-to-point tracking for shipments as they pass through DHL's international freight forwarding and U.S. Express network. Customers can obtain near-real-time data on the status of shipments as they transfer from bulk international air or ocean linehaul shipments to smaller units within the DHL express or global forwarding networks. CDS shipments originating overseas are prepared with U.S. domestic shipping labels for transport via air or ocean. When palletized shipments reach a DHL U.S. import gateway, they clear Customs as a bulk clearance under one entry. They are then broken down and entered into the company's domestic networks, where they are routed to the appropriate DHL service center for final delivery. Customers receive all-inclusive, door-to-door pricing via a single invoice which includes all clearance charges, duties and taxes. http://www.dhl-usa.com
UPSGives Shippers the Ability to Intercept Packages
Customers of UPS can now redirect or recall shipments prior to delivery, through a new service known as UPS Delivery Intercept. It is the industry's only Web-enabled service established for that purpose, the company claimed. Shippers using a UPS package application such as WorldShip, CampusShip or Internet Shipping can click on the 1Z tracking number and request a route. Interception requests can also be made through the shipper's myups.com account, as well as via UPS Signature Tracking. Users can access the service around the clock, for packages being shipped to and from anywhere in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. They can use UPS's Quantum View Notify feature to receive notification of requested and successful interceptions. Receivers can also view the shipment's intercept status when they track the package on any UPS visibility system. Delivery Intercept is built on UPS's Package Flow Technology, which allows the carrier to map more efficient routes for drivers, as well as flag packages for special handling while they are in the UPS network. http://ups.com Exel Now Offering Handling Services for Class II Narcotics

Synapsis Software Now Supports China RoHS Compliance Rules
EMARS, environmental compliance software from Synapsis Technology, Inc., now supports China's new regulations on the return of hazardous materials (RoHS). The new module is designed to help companies comply with the first phase of the China RoHS regulation, and prepare them for Phase Two. The number-one compliance concern among manufacturers today centers on the disclosure and documentation requirements of China RoHS, which took effect in March, Synapsis said. Compared with the European Union's RoHS regime, China RoHS covers more industries, companies and products. Manufacturers are required to limit the use of six hazardous substances in their products--the same six substances as specified in the EU's directive. They are lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE). Unlike its European counterpart, however, China RoHS requires disclose in the form of a specific "x-and-o" chart, Synapsis said. The chart must show the presence or absence of each of the six affected substances, broken down by part or subassembly. Using Synapsis' new EMARS China RoHS application, users can generate an accurate declaration chart in the "x-and-o" format. They can create a completed chart that accurately reflects a product's composition within minutes, the vendor said. The product also keeps the user up to date on changes in the China RoHS regulation.http://www.synapsistech.com
Lufthansa Cargo Adds a Third Flight at DFW International
Lufthansa Cargo had added a third weekly freight flight from Dallas-Ft. Worth International Airport (DFW) to Frankfurt, Germany. The move comes on the heels of 14-percent growth in the carrier's import and export volumes for 2006. It marks the third new European-bound cargo flight added within the past year at DFW. The airport said it has seen significant European growth over the past 12 months, driven by Lufthansa's new flight to Frankfurt as well as non-stop flights to Paris and Brussels on Air France Cargo and Singapore Cargo, respectively. The enhancements are due in part to steady economic growth in North Texas, the airport said. Lufthansa Cargo will fly the added non-stop route between Frankfurt and DFW each Wednesday, deploying an MD-11F freighter with a capacity of approximately 85 tons. The new flight complements existing Friday and Sunday service. http://www.dfwairport.com
