IAS Kicks Off Development of National "Virtual Container Yard" Service; Plans March Deployment
International Asset Systems (IAS) has begun development of the next generation of its Virtual Container Yard system for shipping lines and motor carriers. The technology allows empty boxes to be shifted from import to export and domestic moves without first being returned to a terminal, rail ramp or container yard. An early version of the VCY was launched in the Midwest several years ago, followed by contracts to implement a system for the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Alameda Corridor Transportation Authority. The new system will be deployed on a nationwide basis. Its goal is to make better use of empty containers, and eliminate the unnecessary movement of equipment without loads. The tool will integrate with ocean carriers' equipment-management systems, automatically updating itself with information about the availability of empty containers. Designated truckers will be able to view the containers of participating ocean carriers. The service will also offer tie-ins with mobile technology, such as GPS-enabled cell phones, which truckers can use to initiate updates after pickups and deliveries. It includes rules that ensure the real-time matching of container postings with off-dock equipment needs, to cover genuine export bookings. http://www.interasset.com

DHL Launches New Services for Visibility, Event Notification
DHL has launched ProView, a suite of Web-based tools for shipment visibility and event notification. ProView will give DHL customers both broad and specific views of all incoming and outgoing shipments; they can be notified of key events via the technology platforms of their choice. Users can receive real-time event notification when a shipment reaches key transfer points, such as an international gateway, or encounters problems such as delays due to incorrect addresses. In the process, DHL claimed, customers will be able to better allocate their resources. Platforms for event notification may include e-mail or SMS text messaging to a personal computer, cell phone or mobile device. Built-in filters allow users to specify the types of notifications they want to receive, either by individual shipment or a summary of shipments grouped by billed-to account numbers. Shipment visibility is available for up to 2,000 customer accounts. Customers no longer need to rely on entering individual waybills into a system for tracking purposes, DHL said. http://www.dhl-usa.com
RedPrairie Corp. Introduces In-House Hosting of TMS Apps
RedPrairie Corp. is now offering in-house hosting services for its DLx transportation management system (TMS) software. According to RedPrairie, the hosting option allows companies to deploy TMS applications more rapidly, with lower up-front capital expense and reduced need for I.T. personnel. Small and mid-sized companies are especially well-suited for the service, the vendor said. RedPrairie's TMS suite is now available in three purchasing options, including traditional license, hosted license and software as a service (SaaS). It is available with modular subscription pricing, so users only pay for the parts of the system necessary for their operations. Companies can migrate from a hosted or SaaS agreement to a traditional license down the road. In June of this year, RedPrairie announced a major upgrade of its TMS suite, including global trade management and fleet-management capabilities, plus a new lightweight software client. http://www.redprairie.com

CargoWise Teams With Sectra to Transmit AMS Data to U.S. Customs
CargoWise edi, a vendor of software for air and ocean freight forwarders, has entered into a strategic partnership with Sectra LLC, a provider of Web-enabled business services. The deal is intended to facilitate the electronic transmission of ocean-manifest data from CargoWise's customers to the U.S. Bureau of Customs and Border Protection. It combines the capabilities of CargoWise's ediEnterprise system with the Sectra AMS platform. In the process, it removes an intermediate step from the process and helps customers to expedite the clearance of goods, the companies said. Users of ediEnterprise can build overseas shipment consolidations and transfer advanced manifest data to their U.S. counterparts, who can then use the Sectra AMS service to file electronically. As part of the agreement, Sectra will promote ediEnterprise to its forwarder customers. Sectra said the deal provides a strong foundation for its own users, based on built-in Microsoft .NET capabilities within ediEnterprise. http://www.cargowise.com

IQMS to Offer eSP Stay-Linked Wireless in Tandem With ERP
eBusiness Solution Pros (eSP), a provider of wireless terminal software, has forged a partnership with IQMS, a vendor of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. The arrangement allows IQMS to offer eSP's Stay-Linked, a tool for achieving wireless terminal access, in conjunction with its ERP applications. Enterprise IQ is IQMS's ERP offering for the manufacturing industry; it gives users a foundation for collaboration and e-business environments within a single database. Stay-Linked, which supports a wide range of host-system platforms and wireless terminal devices, provides session persistence and centralized management in a thin-client service, specifically designed for wireless terminal emulation applications. Stay-Linked offers centralized wireless terminal access to 5250/3270, VT100/220 and SSHv2 host-based screen applications. A thin-client software component resides on each wireless terminal device. Because the user's session does not run on the device itself, Stay-Linked allows centralized help-desk support staff to view, control and interact with host-based wireless terminal user sessions in real time, even if the user's device can no longer access the host system. http://www.iqms.com
