Starting early this summer, U.S. Customs will have the authority to bar goods from the Uyghur region if their production involves the use of slave labor.
The burden of proof will fall on the importer, and it will be some time (if ever) before objective and clearly defined criteria are established for this proof. It is incumbent on importers, then, to make every reasonable effort to establish that their goods are ethically produced.
Existing processes — manual or digital — might not be up to this task. Take the time to examine your supply chain sources and the data currently available, to determine if you are exposed to this significant risk. If so, take immediate action to assess your risks and to develop a mitigation plan.
