TransportGistics Helps FMC Technologies Improve Auditing

Global Logistics & Supply Chain Strategies | July 09, 2008

FMC Technologies Inc. is a leading global provider of technology solutions for the energy industry and other industrial markets. It designs, manufactures and services such highly sophisticated products as sub-sea production and processing systems, surface wellhead systems, high pressure fluid control equipment, measurement solutions, and marine loading systems for the oil and gas industry. The company also produces food processing equipment and specialized equipment to service the aviation industry.

With such a diverse product line, FMC Technologies Inc. (FMCTI) found it  challenging to stay on top of reporting, information auditing and data management control, says Al Mazany, global corporate traffic manager for the company.

Noting that FMC Technologies has 23 plants serving its diverse array of industry verticals, he says it took a special partner to work with FMCTI’s auditing requirements.

That partner is TransportGistics, a transportation management and logistics solutions provider. Among other things, it changed its “traditional and effective format to meet FMCTI’s custom design and new data management control requirements. Aside from capturing the general data—peculiar to all auditing companies—TransportGistics responded by expanding their monthly report to meet with FMCTI’s column requirements and capturing new data.”

TransportGistics implemented “I.D. columns” to identify types and sizes of packages; transportation modes (air, ocean, express); carrier identification on each report; and zoning, Mazany says.

Of the last, he says, “They set up zoning areas within the U.S.A. comparable to the express companies that further classified the origin and destination of all consignments.”

Mazany says that the idea for the enhancements originated from within FMCTI, but says, “[I]t was the deliverables and attitude where TransportGistics continues to impress FMC—along, of course, with excellent pricing.”

Describing the benefit of the TransportGistics partnership, Mazany says: “Once only used as an auditing report, the new format and data expansion gave FMCTI totally new control. It provided auditing, consignment origin/destination, zoning, provided clear marketing information for FMCTI, new opportunities for centralization and redistribution, provided information for regional and longhaul carriers, as well as changing our shipping patterns based on a whole series of new information.

“Every monthly report gave FMCTI pertinent data for various departments—purchasing, transportation, warranty, accounting. The carriers were given very specific data which they could .. negotiate on our behalf.”

TransportGistics doesn’t tout methodology, Mazany says. “They just get it done.”
