Lawson Software has made available version 3.0 of its Lawson M3 Trace Engine, an application designed to help the food and beverage industries ensure the safety and quality of their products. The development marks the first time that Lawson has offered the product within the U.S. market. A standalone, Web-based system for product traceability, M3 Trace Engine operates with the Lawson M3 Enterprise Management System as well as with non-Lawson software for enterprise resource planning, farming or food labs. It allows food and beverage companies to share trace data, such as product origin, transportation and other attributes online with retailers and regulators. According to Lawson, the information helps companies to support social responsibility and sustainability initiatives in areas such as product safety, sustainable development and animal welfare. Users can visualize internal production processes in real time, identify potential ingredient issues, and respond to problems before a product leaves the production facility. Lawson Trace Engine also helps to simplify compliance with U.S. and European Union food-safety regulations. In a related development, Lawson announced its acquisition of the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) software division of Freeborders. The deal gives Lawson new capabilities for companies in the fashion industry. Freeborders will retain its existing technology outsourcing services, which were not included in Lawson's purchase. Freeborders serves 79 PLM customers in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
