Schneider National, the nationwide provider of truckload and logistics services, has completed a three-year program under which it converted its intermodal division to an all-container fleet. The carrier had previously deployed a combination of trailers and containers in that service. Schneider said the multimillion-dollar effort underscored a long-term commitment to intermodal transportation and the environmental benefits that it affords shippers and carriers. The switch will further result in greater operational efficiencies and cost savings for customers, Schneider claimed. The conversion program involved more than 12,000 units. Bill Matheson, president of Schneider's Intermodal Services unit, said "there's no doubt" that containers will become the standard equipment for intermodal providers "in the very near future." Schneider National entered the intermodal market in 1991.
