Operational Excellence in the LSP Industry

September 05, 2007

The primary objective of Logistics Service Providers (LSPs) today is to grow profitably in an evermore global, competitive, and demanding business environment. LSPs must strive to achieve operational excellence across all business functions to attain this goal. The blueprint for achieving operational excellence will vary but the end result is always the same: having the ability to continuously adapt, in a cost-effective efficient manner, to the changing requirement and actions of customers and competitors.

Information Technology (IT) plays a critical role in enabling operational excellence. It allows Logistics Service Providers to introduce new services and processes quickly in response to customer requirements and market opportunities. It also provides LSPs with complete visibility to financial

performance, operational activities, and customer relationships.

But many Logistics Service Providers are at the same point manufacturers were a decade ago: burdened with proprietary, outdated, and non-scalable systems. LSPs must adopt a more holistic and integrated view of their IT requirements and strategy (especially as their scale and scope continue to

expand) in order to streamline operations, achieve financial and strategic objectives, and meet customer expectations.

This report outlines LSP trends and challenges facing the industry and you’ll learn how 3 LSP’s – Arvato Services, Panalpina and Schenker are using IT to improve their operations and differentiate themselves from the competition. It also defines operational excellence in the LSP industry and highlights the role and importance of software solutions such as Financials, Customer Relationship

Management, Transportation and Warehouse Management, Order Fulfillment, and Visibility and Event Management.
