Best-in-Class Manufacturers Drive Performance Management

From the Aberdeen Group | June 11, 2008

Analysis of over 200 manufacturers by the Aberdeen Group reveals that Best-in-Class manufacturers realize 24% more On Time Deliveries, have a 30% higher level of OEE and a 29% higher overall yield when compared to Laggard manufacturers. Putting these findings in context in the recent research report entitled "Event Driven Manufacturing Intelligence: Creating Closed Loop Performance Management," Matthew Littlefield, a Senior Research Analyst with Aberdeen's Global Manufacturing Practice, states that, "Given today's economic climate and pricing pressure, manufacturers are continually faced with the need to reduce operating costs. This newly published research shows that Best-in-Class manufacturers are investing in capabilities that allow manufacturers to reduce variability and better understand how operational performance in manufacturing affects overall profitability and revenue. These manufacturers are also more likely to adopt solutions that provide real-time role based visibility into manufacturing operations and improve decision making by integrating real time data with analytics."

The report offers the following recommendations:

1. Choose technology capabilities that are integrated through a common solution platform and support all aspects of manufacturing operations: maintenance, production, quality, and inventory management. Best-in-Class manufacturers are more likely to use automated workflows, visualization, and analytical solutions across each aspect of Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM).

2. Establish event based real time interoperability among visualization and analytical technology solutions and other technology layers across both plant and enterprise levels. This enables manufacturers to seamlessly connect all of the necessary business processes under the MOM umbrella--quality, maintenance, production, and inventory to achieve operational excellence.
