This technology could allow manufacturers to automate the production of hundreds of billions of dollars worth of clothing each year, Sewbo said.
"Many people are surprised to learn that this is the very first time that a robot has sewn a piece of clothing," said inventor Jonathan Zornow.
Despite decades and millions of dollars in industrial research, a major hurdle has been robots’ struggle to reliably handle fabrics. Sewbo says it figured out how to temporarily stiffen materials, making it easy for industrial robots to assemble clothes.
