The Chinese government told certain domestic companies to stop buying products from Micron, the United States’ biggest memory chipmaker manufacturer.

The decision was announced May 21 by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) after the organization said that Micron had recently failed a cybersecurity review, according to CNN. The CAC provided a brief statement on the matter, claiming Micron products pose “serious network security risks” that could do damage to China’s national security and information infrastructure.

Chinese officials have warned of “unspecified consequences” for domestic companies that continue using Micron products, according to the Associated Press.

In the same announcement, the CAC attempted to reassure foreign companies by saying the country will continue to promote high-level openings to the rest of the world as long as those organizations comply with Chinese laws and regulations. The CAC also said it welcomes various products and enterprises from around the world to enter the Chinese market.

Despite the domestic ban on Micron, U.S. President Joe Biden said during a news conference that took place at the end of the recently held G7 Summit in Japan from May 19 to May 21, 2023, that he believes relations between the United States and China will soon start improving. “We are not looking to decouple from China,” Biden said. “We are looking to de-risk and diversify our relationship with China.”
