The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) has launched its new Priority Next Day service in 54 markets, allowing for overnight delivery of packages to more than 67 million customers. 

The service — which was launched on March 1 in 28 states — will provide next-day delivery for packages up to 20 pounds within up to 150 miles from origin. The USPS plans to expand Priority Next Day to 295 million people later, covering roughly 87% of the country's population. According to the agency, the service was designed to support e-commerce shipments, while catering to businesses that have specified cutoff windows for shipments.

The USPS is set for sweeping changes in the months to come, with U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy having announced his plans to step down after nearly five years in the role. In a February letter to the USPS board of governors, DeJoy instructed the group to begin the search for his successor, although he did not specify when or why he was choosing to leave.

Over the course of his tenure, DeJoy has overseen dramatic cuts to the USPS budget, while raising prices on mail and slowing first-class delivery speeds in order to overhaul what he's described as a "broken" business model.
