Chipmaker Nvidia is planning to pour hundreds of billions of dollars into its semiconductor and electronics supply chain in the U.S. over the next four years. 

In an interview with Financial Times, Nvidia CEO and co-founder Jensen Huang explained how the company is looking to capitalize on the Trump administration's "America First" approach to manufacturing, especially as China-based tech company Huawei has grown into a dominant global force in the semiconductor sector. Huang also expressed a need to ensure that his company's supply chain is resilient enough to withstand any potential interruptions to supplies out of Taiwan, be it tariffs or natural disasters.

"The most important thing is to be prepared,” he said. “At this point, we know that we can manufacture in the U.S. — we have a sufficiently diversified supply chain."

Addressing Huawei's rapid expansion in recent years, Huang asserted that it has become the "single most formidable technology company in China." According to research from the Mercator Institute for China Studies — a nonprofit German think tank — Huawei has consistently received tens of billions of dollars worth government subsidies dating back to 2009, allowing it to grow out of its initial mandate as a telecom firm, and expand out into the artificial intelligence, semiconductor and software spaces, all while building a self-sufficient supply chain for chip manufacturing in China.

Other companies have similarly sought to increase their chipmaker capacity in the U.S. over the last year. In April 2024, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) received $6.6 billion in subsidies from the Biden administration to build three advanced chip facilities in Arizona. Less than a year later, Apple unveiled plans to spend $500 billion over the next four years to expand its domestic workforce, data center capacity and production of advanced silicon chips.
