Google and Kairos Power have announced plans to deploy an advanced nuclear plant in Tennessee by 2030.
In an August 18 release, Google detailed its plans to purchase electricity from Kairos Power's planned Hermes 2 reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, currently scheduled to open in 2030. By 2035, the plant is expected to provide Google with up to 500 megawatts of capacity to power its data centers in Montgomery County, Tennessee, and Jackson County, Alabama. The Hermes 2 reactor will also provide 50 megawatts of nuclear energy to the Tennessee Valley Authority's (TVA) power grid as part of a first-of-its-kind purchasing agreement.
“To power the future, we need to grow the availability of smart, firm energy sources,” said Google's global head of data center energy Amanda Peterson Corio. “This collaboration will accelerate the deployment of innovative nuclear technologies and help support the needs of our growing digital economy."

Hermes 2 will be the first reactor deployed as part of a deal signed by Google and Kairos Power in October 2024. According to the companies, the TVA is also the first public utility in the country to sign onto a power purchasing agreement involving a fourth generation advanced nuclear reactor.
Google signed a separate deal in May 2025 with developer Elementl Power for three other sites for nuclear reactors. Each of those sites are expected to provide 600 megawatts worth of power capacity, although the projects are all still in the early stages of development.
