Five Critical Warehouse Problems Addressed with Warehouse Intelligence

Warehouses today face mounting pressure from labor shortages, underperforming automation systems and unreliable inventory data. Despite years of investment, many facilities still depend on manual work and outdated processes. The result: SLA failures, shipment delays, higher costs and reputational damage — threatening both current business and future growth.

Yet these challenges also present an opportunity. When addressed, they unlock measurable value: stronger working capital, reduced risk and higher profitability across the supply chain.

This is where warehouse intelligence comes in. By combining autonomous drones, real-time data and AI, it creates a foundation that supports every process, from receiving to shipping. Instead of treating automation as isolated fixes, warehouse intelligence connects data across operations, reduces bottlenecks from manual work and enables faster, smarter decisions.

Here are five common challenges that warehouse intelligence helps solve.

1 Data Stuck in Silos and Used Reactively

Most warehouses were built as local execution engines — each site managing its own people, automation and workflows. That design made sense in a more stable, linear supply chain. But today, siloed execution creates blind spots and inconsistencies that ripple across the network. Data is often only used to fix problems when they occur, leaving operators reactive instead of proactive.

“The data tells me there’s an issue, so I go fix it. Then everything continues the same until the next issue pops up, and the cycle repeats,” says Michael DeLeonardis, chief revenue officer at Verity. “That’s not taking advantage of the full value of data and technology. It’s just putting very expensive band-aids on the problem. No wonder so many companies report weak ROI from their automation investments — even as other industries accelerate with AI and data.”

The answer, DeLeonardis says, is what we call “intelligent orchestration.” With autonomous drones capturing real-time data and feeding it into AI systems, warehouses can move beyond isolated fixes. Instead of being limited to a single function, data is leveraged across the entire warehouse lifecycle, supporting decisions, mapping next best actions and reducing reliance on manual orchestration. The result: fewer errors, fewer bottlenecks, and daily operations aligned with business goals.

2 Changing the Technology Mindset

One of the biggest barriers to progress is the traditional mindset toward automation. Too often, operators see it only as a way to optimize existing processes rather than transform how the warehouse operates. Optimization delivers efficiency; transformation reshapes outcomes and pushes performance beyond today’s limits.

Inventory counting is a good example. Many look for technology to reduce headcount. But the real value of technology, data and AI lies in visibility, driving improvements that extend beyond the act of counting to core warehouse outcomes, from compliance and accuracy to the movement of goods across the supply chain.

“Many clients tell us, ‘We don’t have an issue. Our WMS shows 98% accuracy,’” DeLeonardis says. “but 80% of the lost goods we find were never in the WMS at all. They never showed up, so nobody knows where they came from or where they’re going. They’re orphaned, and that doesn’t look like 98% accuracy.”

Breaking free from this mindset means looking past incremental efficiencies to the broader outcomes technology can unlock, turning warehouses from places of routine optimization into engines of transformation.

3 Linking Warehouse Performance to Customer Experience

An incorrect order is often the first domino to fall, eroding trust, weakening loyalty and hurting a company’s reputation. To protect that relationship, many businesses absorb the cost by rushing replacements from other warehouses, often at a steep financial loss.

“Let’s say I know I’ve got this part in another warehouse,” DeLeonardis explains. “I’ll spend $75 to overnight it just to maintain the integrity of the order. But the product itself only brought in $5 in revenue. That’s a $70 loss for one mistake.”

Cancellations follow a similar pattern: Without accurate warehouse data, stockouts occur and customers cancel orders that can’t be filled.

The good news: With prompt visibility across the network, these risks drop sharply. At a major pet supplies retailer, live warehouse data cut incomplete and delayed shipments by 49%. What began as labor savings from cycle counting quickly scaled into network-wide gains in accuracy and order reliability.

This shift reflects a total value mindset: seeing the warehouse not just as an operational function, but as a driver of customer satisfaction, stronger performance and a healthier bottom line across the network.

4 Inventory Reliability as the Foundation of Supply Chain Resilience

At a global furniture retailer, that had incorporated warehouse intelligence, a long-term study across more than 80 sites showed a 13% average reduction in oversells, which occur when demand exceeds available supply because of inaccurate or poorly coordinated data.

While at a leading U.S. logistics provider, intelligent orchestration enabled the recovery of 25,000 units of previously “lost” stock and cut shrinkage by 1%. The impact goes far beyond the warehouse floor: with more reliable data, demand planning and forecasting is more accurate, leading to stronger decisions across the supply chain.

The outcome is greater resilience across the network: fewer failures, smoother operations and stronger financial performance. Reliable, real-time data replaces blind spots and volatility with confidence to plan, forecast and execute with certainty.

5 From Reaction to Anticipation

Relying on basic data keeps organizations stuck in reaction mode, finding problems only after they’ve disrupted customers and operations. Warehouse intelligence changes this by turning operational data into forward-looking insights that enable proactive action.

Predictive models can flag stockout risks early, giving managers time to rebalance inventory, prioritize replenishments or activate contingency sourcing before shortages occur. Capacity alerts can do the same, signaling when a warehouse is nearing its limits so leaders can plan overflow, accelerate shipments or reallocate stock across the network.

The result is a shift from firefighting to foresight, avoiding disruption before it materializes and strengthening resilience across the entire network.

The Verity System Elevates Warehouse Intelligence

Verity’s solution addresses a core challenge: the lack of trustworthy, real-time intelligence in warehouses. Unlike automation built mainly to move goods, Verity’s autonomous drones act as always-available sensors, capturing the data traditional systems miss and feeding it into the Verity Warehouse Intelligence Platform. There, it becomes actionable insights that eliminate guesswork and drive measurable results.

The outcome is a shift from reacting to problems to proactively orchestrating the entire warehouse lifecycle. Because this intelligence scales across multiple facilities, leaders gain visibility not just within sites but across the network, closing performance gaps, anticipating risks and aligning operations with enterprise goals.
