What does it mean to “redesign AI from the ground up”?
A team of researchers at George Mason University, in collaboration with the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Northwestern University, is undertaking an ambitious initiative: They want to redesign artificial intelligence “from the ground up.” They contend that current computer systems and AI models fall short of replicating how the human brain actually works. Instead of processing information via continuous streams of data, their system would use precisely timed “spikes” — analogous to the way that real neurons spur activity in the brain. Moreover, the chips involved would exploit the quantum properties of electrons, creating an AI model that’s faster, more efficient and more private than those in operation today.
