Maersk Capitalizes on 'Heightened Volatility' as Rates Surge

Maersk has raised its full-year financial outlook after second-quarter revenue jumped 20% year-over-year, fueled by higher ocean freight rates and strong demand across its businesses.

According to Maersk's second quarter earnings report released on August 13, the ocean carrier brought in $15.8 billion in revenue, up from $13.1 billion a year earlier, while operating profit nearly doubled year-over-year to $1.6 billion. The company also reported especially strong growth for imports into Africa, North America and Latin America, thanks to a surge in exports from China that helped drive a 4.1% boost in Maersk's total ocean cargo volumes.

Addressing the larger shipping climate the industry has faced, CEO Vincent Clerc described Maersk's second quarter earnings as "yet another proof point of the new era of heightened volatility we have entered."

"From ports to inland transportation, we are seeing increased congestion and disruption across multiple geographies," Clerc noted, adding that those conditions created opportunities for Maersk to redeploy shipping capacity to higher-demand trade lanes, and capitalize on rising freight rates.

For its full 2026 outlook, Maersk now predicts that its operating profit will come in between $10.5 billion and $12.5 billion, up from its previous estimate of $8-10 billion. That higher forecast reflects the company's strong second-quarter results, and the clearer picture Maersk says that it now has for shipping demand for the rest of the year.
