With President Donald Trump again threatening Canada with higher tariffs, the once-stable relationship between the United States and its northern neighbor has spiraled into an escalating trade war threatening decades of economic cooperation.

The U.S. and Canada had hoped to hold extended trade talks to avert 50% tariffs against $20 billion worth of Canadian goods. However, the tariffs went into effect on August 22, after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pulled out of negotiations, rejecting what he described as last-minute U.S. demands that were "unfair and uneconomic."

In a post to his Truth Social platform on August 24, Trump then threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and auto parts from 25% to 50% on January 1, 2027, while accusing Canada of "ripping off the United States of America for years."

Both sides now appear to be more dug in than ever, with Trump accusing Canada of being "among the worst nations in the world to deal with," and Carney vowing to retaliate dollar-for-dollar against any new U.S. tariffs. In an interview with the Associated Press, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said that "everything is on the table," including cutting off power the province provides to roughly 1.5 million American homes, and restricting Canadian exports like high-grade nickel and refined uranium.

In the meantime, retaliatory Canadian tariffs against U.S. dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, electronics and other goods are set to take effect on September 8. Regarding potential talks over the future of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, Carney said that the recently-failed trade talks give Canada a "new perspective" on how the deal might look moving forward.
