SkyBitz, a maker of remote asset tracking and information-management technology, has developed a new mobile terminal which incorporates the company's global locating system (GLS) technology. The SkyBitz GLS400 is a machine-to-machine (M2M) asset-tracking device providing operational visibility to companies in transportation, oil and gas, chemicals, intermodal services, government and other markets that rely on heavy equipment or remote assets. According to the vendor, the unit was subjected to more than 160 independent tests. Its electrical design allows for a longer service life than tracking devices based on global positioning system (GPS) technology. The terminal is powered by eight AA lithium batteries, allowing for easy replacement. It is constructed of weatherproof Lexan polycarbonate, a material used in helmets for astronauts and race car drivers. Instead of relying on power-intensive onboard calculations, SkyBitz's Service Operation Center performs positioning calculations centrally. The SkyBitz Insight Web application requires no complex integration or software installation, and contains 50 separate standard reports and custom reporting features, according to the vendor.
