With attacks between the United States and Iran having resumed, President Donald Trump is proposing that the U.S. charge 20% tolls for ships transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

In a July 13 post to his Truth Social platform, Trump said that the U.S. would be reinstating its blockade of the strait, and declared that the U.S. should be reimbursed for "providing safety and security" to the waterway. Without providing specifics as to how the proposed 20% tolls would be enacted, Trump added that the process would begin immediately.

Trump reiterated that stance in an interview with Fox News, proclaiming that the U.S. will "probably run" the strait, and that "we should be reimbursed for it."

“We can’t be expected to do that for nothing, unlike we had for many years,” he said. “We guarded it for nothing, and now we’re going to guard it, we’re going to get paid for guarding it — a lot of money."

Over the course of negotiations with Iran, the U.S. has repeatedly insisted that any peace deal must allow for free passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said as much following a late June visit to the Middle East, stating at the time that "no country is allowed to charge tolls or fees on an international waterway." Iran has been similarly insistent that it be allowed to manage the strait however it sees fit, and had announced a plan to introduce its own system of fees following a 60-day negotiating period agreed to as part of its June ceasefire deal with the U.S.
