Radio frequency identification (RFID) is being considered by various groups in the manufacturing industry in a bid to fight counterfeiting and pirated products. After the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) and the Coalition Against Counterfeiting and Piracy (CACP) produced a white paper encouraging the use of different legislation and systems to stop faked goods, a member of NAM addressed the potential of radio technology in the supply chain.
Mark-Anthony Signorino, director of technology policy at NAM, says the sector is eager to use innovations such as these.
"While we don't name RFID specifically--because we don't want to create technology winners and losers--RFID is one of the things we were thinking about," he says.
It is thought that RFID may be useful in counteracting fakes as it enables companies to track goods at different points of manufacturing and supply chains, allowing them to establish whether items have been replaced with fakes.
