China vehemently protested the U.S. Department of Commerce’s most recent update to export controls that will limit the supply of advanced computer chips and computer-making equipment to China.
According to the Associated Press, the export control revisions, which were announced October 17, aim to prevent the use of chips in military applications, including the development of artificial intelligence as well as hypersonic missiles. The regulation updates created new requirements that make it more difficult for China to manufacture advanced chips in other countries, while expanding the list of manufacturing equipment that falls under export controls.
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce argued that the new controls are “improper” and asked that the Biden-Harris administration lift them as soon as possible. China claimed that the restrictions on chips, used for AI and other advanced applications, will hinder normal economic and trade activities due to the globalization of the semiconductor industry.
China said that the recent trade rules “seriously threaten the stability of industrial supply chains.”
“U.S. semiconductor companies have suffered huge losses and semiconductor companies in other countries have also been affected,” said China’s Commerce Ministry.
The U.S. Commerce Secretary, Gina Raimondo, said that the restrictions were created to protect technologies that have “clear national security or human rights implications.”
“The vast majority of semiconductors will remain unrestricted. But when we identify national security or human rights threats, we will act decisively and in concert with our allies,” she said.
