The Port of New Orleans remained closed September 12, as it assessed the damage from Hurricane Francine.
The port shut down operations prior to Hurricane Francine's arrival on September 11. On September 12, the port announced it would remain closed for clean-up, and to prepare terminals to return to normal operations on September 13. Other Louisiana shipping hubs forced to close by the storm included ports in Plaquemines, Cameron, Lake Charles and Houma. According to Reuters, this could potentially impact the exporting of fuel, soybeans and grains from the Gulf Coast.
Although it made landfall as a category 2 hurricane, Francine was downgraded to a tropical storm as it moved further inland on September 12. The National Weather Service estimates that that the storm brought six to eight inches of rain to Louisiana on its first day, and knocked out power for more than 260,000 people across the state.
