Honda has announced a partnership with Third Lane Mobility — the parent company for scooter shares Bird and Spin — to launch a line of small all-electric last-mile delivery vehicles in urban areas.
According to an April 16 release from Honda, the company's Fastport venture will roll out its "micromobility" eQuad vehicles to deliver packages, groceries and food orders, with the service providing an alternative to larger trucks and vans. Bird and Spin field crews will also use the vehicles to maintain their existing scooter and e-bike fleets across more than 200 cities.
"We created Fastport and our eQuad micromobility vehicle to address rising urban congestion, emissions and operating costs where full-size commercial vehicles are less practical," said Fastport general manager Jose Wyszogrod.
The eQuad itself is described as a compact, four-wheeled single-rider EV, using swappable mobile battery power packs. Third Lane Mobility CEO Stewart Lyons noted that the vehicles will also help cities meet transportation safety goals, while supporting emissions targets at both the corporate and municipal level. Initial deployments are planned for select university campuses and major cities across the U.S., although Honda has yet to share specific locations and timelines for the launch.
