A ship was seized off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, while a cargo vessel near Oman was attacked and sunk.
According to the Associated Press, it's unclear who was behind either incident, although the ship that was seized was reportedly taken toward Iranian waters. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations center said that the seized ship was initially anchored 38 nautical miles northeast of the UAE's Port of Fujairah. The cargo vessel that was sunk near Oman was an Indian-flagged vessel en route to a separate UAE port, with India's foreign ministry labeling the attack "unacceptable."
While Iran has yet to explicitly claim responsibility for the incidents, a senior Iranian official speaking to the Iran Daily newspaper on May 14 reiterated the country's claim to the Strait of Hormuz, and its right to seize any oil tankers tied to the U.S. Iran also recently expanded its definition of the area it considers to make up the strait, widening it from 20-30 miles to 200-300 miles.
Iran has refused to engage in ceasefire talks with the U.S. unless a handful of conditions are met, including reparations for the war, and acknowledging the country's sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that the strait needs to be fully open to all traffic with no limitations.
