A massive fire at a distribution center in Tracy, California, could disrupt medical supplies across the West Coast.
KTVU Fox 2 reports that the fire started on the roof of a medical supply warehouse operated by Medline Industries in the early afternoon on June 11. Firefighters then discovered that the warehouse's hydrants were not working, and that the building's sprinkler system hadn't activated, making it so crews had to connect hoses from two fire engines to tap into the city's water supply. Days later, crews were still working to put out the blaze.
Although trucks at the distribution center that had been loaded with medical supplies were not damaged by the fire, crews are still figuring out how to best get the supplies to hospitals in the area.
"This devastating fire is going to affect e-commerce throughout the nation, definitely in the western part of the United States," said San Joaquin County Deputy Fire Chief Brian Bagley, noting that the Medline warehouse was the main distribution hub for the region's medical supplies.
According to its website, Medline Industries is the country's largest provider of medical-surgical surgical products and supply chain services, and operates a network of 70 distribution centers. Fire officials say that they're currently coordinating with Medline to allow the company to have its drivers access supplies at the warehouse that weren't damaged in the fire. Local hospital network UC Davis Health said that it's also asking its employees to be careful with supplies until it can assess the full impacts.
