Horizon Lines, LLC, the liner-shipping subsidiary of Horizon Lines, Inc., is adding 1,200 forty-five-foot containers to its fleet in October. The purchase is part of an ongoing equipment investment program by the operator of U.S.-flag containerships in the domestic trades. Since the beginning of this year, Horizon has ordered 2,200 new dry containers, including the new 45-footers and 600 forty-foot high-cube boxes. The company has also added more than 1,000 new high-cube refrigerated containers, including 40-foot reefers and 45-footers specifically for use in the Puerto Rico trade. Horizon has added more than 235 flat-racks in its Pacific services, especially to Hawaii, where there is a need for oversized equipment by construction and heavy-equipment shippers. Horizon said it is seeking to optimize its shipping equipment for customers, with new capacity and the flexibility to handle special cargo. The line has taken delivery of five new Hunter-Class container vessels this year, each with a capacity of 2,824 twenty-foot equivalent units and a service speed of 23 knots. Horizon operates a total of 21 ships and five port terminals linking the continental U.S. with Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia and Puerto Rico.
