Lexar Media prides itself on being among the first of Wal-Mart's suppliers to voluntarily become one of the retailer's early RFID adopters. But unlike many other companies in this category, Lexar went beyond implementing a 'slap-and-ship' tag application, deploying a more comprehensive RFID system designed to increase outbound shipping efficiencies.
Lexar markets and manufactures flash memory products and offers memory cards, USB flash drives, card readers, and ATA controller technology for the digital photography, consumer electronics, industrial, and communications markets. In addition to Wal-Mart, the company sells to such retailers as Target, Best Buy, Office Depot, and Office Max.
Lee Mar, a Lexar senior analyst and the company's RFID program manager, says Lexar wanted a solution that would improve the accuracy and efficiency of operations in its warehouses as well as strengthen collaboration across the supply chain. "We knew RFID was the right choice for us based on the volume of information it provides," Mar explains. "Customers were receiving orders that either were missing product or contained product that was really intended for another customer--which of course did not make them very happy. Misships also forced us to incur additional costs for return shipping, restocking, and reprocessing orders."
