A three-dimensional imaging technology that uses radio waves to screen cargo may be just what the air cargo industry needs in these security-conscious times. U.S. legislation mandates that by August 2010, all bellyhold airfreight has to be screened at the box level. This would force airlines to break up all pallets and containers tendered to them that do not come from a certified cargo screening facility either at the shipper or the forwarder.
FreightScan, a California-based technology provider for the air cargo industry, claims that this can be overcome with its CargoVizion imaging system. The technology scans full pallets with radio waves, which create a 3D image of the contents of all boxes on the skid.
