Panasonic Debuts Toughbook for Field Workers in Extreme Environments

July 23, 2008
Panasonic Computer Solutions Co

Panasonic Computer Solutions Co. has made available the Panasonic Toughbook CF-U1, the latest addition to its line of Toughbook rugged mobile computers. The unit combines the compactness and lightness of traditional handheld devices with the computing functionality of a Windows XP or Vista-based laptop, the vendor said. According to Panasonic, the CF-U1 is the first ultra mobile PC (UMPC) to integrate the new low-power Intel Atom processor in a rugged handheld computer for use in the field. It is designed to operate in a diverse range of environments, such as construction sites, mining operations, oil and gas refineries, manufacturing facilities, railroad yards, city streets and storage warehouses. In addition, said Panasonic, the CF-U1 is well suited for use by insurance adjusters, building inspectors, police officers, firefighters and other first responders. It features a number of docking options that expand functionality, whether in a vehicle, at a desk or on the move. It operates on the full-function Windows XP and Vista operating systems, with a backlit QWERTY keyboard that also allows for viewing in sunlight with low power. The magnesium alloy chassis is designed to withstand drops of up to four feet.
