On average, almost a third of all C-suite level executives in the transportation industry (31.6%) are women, according to a recent survey.

Based on a report released by the Women in Trucking Association June 26, entitled “Women in Trucking Index Gender Diversity Data 2023,” 39.2% of respondents say that between 20% and 49% of all C-suite executives in the transportation space are women. Simultaneously, 7.8% of responders report that at least 90% of C-suite-level executives in the transportation industry are women.

On average, 36.9% of respondents report that women are company leaders — a person or C-suite level executive that holds supervisory responsibilities according to the report. Plus, participating companies report that over a quarter (28.4%) of all transportation industry board members are women on average.

When analyzing the other roles women have within the transportation space on average, an overwhelming majority (74.6%) of them are human resources managers and/or talent managers. In fact, 39.6% of participants claim that over 90% of the professionals holding HR/talent management roles in the transportation industry are women.

When it comes to female drivers, the WIT Index found that, on average, 12.1% of workers holding commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) are female. Of the 470,000 total drivers assessed for the 2023 WIT Index, roughly 13.7% of them are women, about 64,390 drivers.

The report also showed that, on average, 43.5% of dispatchers and 41.6% of safety professionals in the transportation industry are female.

A majority of participants (56.4%) say their company does have a formal diversity and inclusion (D&I) policy set in place, a major jump from 45.5% in 2022. Meanwhile, an additional 19.3% claim their organization is in the process of creating a formal D&I policy.

Unfortunately, 19.3% of responders say their company does not have a formal D&I policy in place. Another 5% say they are not sure if their company has a diversity and inclusion program.

The Women in Trucking Association surveyed 470,000 drivers from 350 organizations for the 2023 WIT Index from January 2023 to April 2023. Very large companies, that have over 10,000 employees, made up 14.2% of responders in the survey while 13.4% represented organizations with 1,000 to 4,999 employees. Another 23.1% of participating companies had less than 50 employees. Medium-sized businesses (50 to 499 employees) had the highest level of representation making up 33.8% of all responders.
