The American Medical Manufacturers Association (AMMA) lauded new U.S. tariffs on several products from China, in the face of what they label "an onslaught of underpriced, subpar Chinese imports."
President Biden put forth the tariffs on May 14, raising rates for a vast array of imports, from electric vehicles to steel and aluminum. For medical equipment such as syringes and needles, tariffs will rise from 0% to 50% in 2024. Certain personal protective equipment like respirators and face masks will rise from 7.5% to 25%, while rubber surgical gloves will increase from 7.5% to 25%.
In a release issued shortly after the tariffs were announced, the AMMA called the measure a "remarkable increase," stating that it "signifies a pivotal moment in America's quest for self-reliance and true resilience." They went on to note that they plan to remain "vigilant" as a public comment period for the tariffs gets underway.
Also included in the new tariffs were ship-to-shore cranes (0% to 25%), solar cells (25% to 50%), lithium ion EV batteries (7.5% to 25%), and semiconductors (25% to 50%). The administration had frequently expressed concerns in the months leading up to the increases, over China flooding U.S. markets with a glut of cheap products, particularly within the green energy industry.
