Walmart will soon be adding a drone delivery option to the company's app for customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area.
Walmart first started experimenting with drone deliveries in DFW in 2021, before expanding the service to cover roughly three-quarters of the region early in 2024. By the end of June, drone delivery from providers Wing — owned by Google parent company Alphabet — and Zipline will be accessible inside the Walmart app for eligible DFW addresses. The company says that drones allow for delivery times of 30 minutes or less, and that it has completed more than 30,000 drone deliveries since the program began.
This comes as other online retailers have made similar strides towards expanding their use of drones. In May, Amazon's Prime Air drone program was cleared by the Federal Aviation Administration to fly without line of sight from pilots, Bloomberg reported. That clearance — which Walmart has for its own drones — allows for a larger delivery network across greater distances in approved areas. In January, Wing also announced a new line of drones capable of carrying packages of up to five pounds, twice the payload of their previous iteration.
