Amazon is now offering same-day perishable grocery delivery services in more than 1,000 U.S. cities and towns, with plans to expand the offering to include more than 2,300 locations by the end of the year.
The company described the move in an August 13 release as one of the most significant expansions for Amazon's grocery division ever. It will allow customers to order produce, dairy, meat, seafood, baked goods and frozen foods with same-day delivery, and bundle those items with other, non-food, products. Amazon Prime members will get same-day service for free on all orders over $25 in most cities, with orders under that threshold subject to a $2.99 fee. Non-members can get same-day fresh grocery deliveries for a fee of $12.99 regardless of order size.
“We’re continuously innovating to make grocery shopping simpler, faster, and more affordable for our customers, especially Prime members,” Worldwide Amazon Stores CEO Doug Herrington said.
The company initially tested out the service in 2024 in Phoenix, Arizona, Orlando, Florida, and Kansas City, Missouri. Over the course of that trial period, Amazon said that in those regions, strawberries became one of the top five overall best sellers on the platform, while bananas, Honeycrisp apples, limes and avocados were among the most popular perishable grocery items. The company reported more than $100 billion in gross sales of groceries and household essentials in 2024 across all markets, not including sales from Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh.
