Japanese brewer Asahi is facing a product shortage following a ransomware cyberattack that forced the company to shut down its factories and operations in Japan.
BBC News reports that brands in Japan such as 7-Eleven and FamilyMart have warned customers to expect shortages of Asahi products for the foreseeable future. In an October 3 release, Asahi also shared that it is still unable to receive external emails as a result of the September 29 cyberattack, and that its system-based order and shipment processes remain suspended with no clear timeline for recovery.
"We are continuing our investigation to determine the nature and scope of the potential unauthorized data transfer," Asahi president and CEO Atsushi Katsuki said. "We are making every effort to restore the system as quickly as possible, while implementing alternative measures to ensure continued product supply to our customers."
Asahi expects to partially resume call center operations starting the week of October 6, and believes that the scope of the system disruption was limited to Japan. Although the brewer also sells brands in the U.K. and EU, Japan accounts for half of Asahi's sales.
