Ocean carrier Ocean Network Express (ONE) says that it has extended its partnership with Nike, by which the retailer will continue to use ONE's sustainable shipping service designed to help clients manage their Scope 3 emissions.
Dubbed ONE LEAF+, the service allows shippers to transport cargo on ships using UCOME (Used Cooking Oil Methyl Ester), a biofuel that generates 84% fewer carbon emissions compared to standard marine fuel, measured "from well to wake." After a shipment is delivered, ONE then provides the shipper with a certification verified by an independent third party that indicates their total carbon emission savings. Shippers are also able to select different levels of carbon emission savings, typically ranging between 10% and 80%.
“Our collaboration with Nike exemplifies how leading companies can work together to create more environmentally responsible supply chains," said ONE senior VP Gilberto Santos in an October 15 release.
Nike has worked with ONE for general shipping services since 2018, and began using ONE LEAF+ in 2024. Nike has a stated goal to reduce its Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 65% by 2030, as well as its Scope 3 emissions by 30%. By the end of the 2024 fiscal year, Nike reported that its Scope 3 emissions had already been cut by 29% since 2020. The retailer also partnered with Dutch shipping company Future Proof Shipping in 2023 to launch the world's first hydrogen-powered inland container barge, and worked with Maersk to launch the first shipping vessel in the U.S. to operate on green methanol. Nike estimates that roughly a quarter of its inbound ocean units were shipped using biofuels in 2024.
