A Greek oil tanker was damaged by a projectile or drone in the Black Sea as it sailed toward Russia, Greece’s shipping ministry said.
The vessel was hit on March 14, some 14 nautical miles (26 km) off Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, the ministry said in a statement. The ship is currently sailing under its own steam, and no oil spill has been detected, it added. The crew of 24 is safe, with no injuries reported.
A projectile hit the Greek-flagged Maran Homer, causing an unspecified amount of damage, according to the risk management and crisis response company MTI Network. The vessel was attacked in international waters and left the location to undergo an inspection, MTI Chief Executive Officer Pat Adamson told Bloomberg.
Tankers in the Black Sea have become targets of Ukrainian attacks in recent months as the administration in Kyiv expands the scope of its strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, aiming to reduce the Kremlin’s proceeds from oil exports that are funding the war in Ukraine.
There’s been no claim of responsibility for the attack on the Maran Homer.
Ukraine has also been hitting Russia’s loading terminals, pipelines networks and refineries in a move to reduce fuel supplies to the front lines. Russia has been relentlessly targeting Ukraine’s civil and energy infrastructure, leaving millions of people without power and heating as the war between the neighbors has entered a fifth year.
The attack on the Greek ship may be linked to “the pressure that countries in the region are applying,” Greek shipping minister Vasilis Kikilias told state-run ERT TV on March 14. Greece will protect the interests of its fleet and will raise the issue at the European Council, Kikilias said.
The fleet of Greece-based Maran Tanker Management has not lifted Russian-origin oil since the start of the war in Ukraine, data from MTI Network indicated. The vessels have loaded Kazakhstan oil barrels at the Caspian Pipeline Consortium terminal, in compliance with western energy sanctions against Russia, according to MTI Network.
The media office for the CPC declined to comment on the incident.
Earlier on Saturday, Ukrainian drones sparked a fire at a Russian oil refinery and caused damage at a port in the southern Krasnodar region, while Ukraine faced one of the largest missile and drone barrages so far this year, with at least four civilians killed.
